Sorry. Seems I'm wrong. I must have run xmlroff's configure by mistake
when I was determining dependencies.

1.8 is really quite old. The lastest is here:
http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake/automake-1.9.6.tar.bz2

If you've not already done it, don't forget the make distclean removing
config.log too, thanks.
