The forward references are the subject of #77. I was working on two-pass processing as a temporary solution for the forward references problem, but I was tying myself in knots trying to add an abstract supertype for all FOs that can have an ID, so I ended up putting that in the 'idable' branch and reverting the trunk so I could make xmlroff 0.6.1.
