there has been many calls for this over the years....the main issue as i see it;

- what does this provide that fn:doc() doesnt already supply? if the tip of your SOA is wsdl, then xslt can consume that now and figure out the interfaces with concrete uri...

- the problem in HTTP land is if POST is required

I think it would gain more acceptance if we step back and just provide a new Module called HTTP, whereby we provide a get/post stuff....instead of bind directly to someone's idea of a web service...that way people can create XSLT 2.0 functions around this.
