Well, I don't know if it would be "syntax-based" or "string-based?" Yes?

That is we recognize some strings in particular context, say an author 
field, with some variations, to all identify the same singer and poet.

But the same is true for longer "prose" fields. Yes?

That is we recognize some strings in it as identifying particular subjects.

Once we "recognize" those subjects, then the syntax mechanisms of topic 
maps, following the TMDM for example, enable us to create syntax 
representations that have the characteristic of merging, for example.

But we have to *recognize* subjects before we can even do the syntax or 
string based mappings.

One of the very neglected areas of topic maps, that is subject 
recognition. Or put more bluntly, topic map authoring. I understand and 
still agree with the rationale for not covering that in ISO 13250. But 
we have failed in a broader duty to the wider community in not 
addressing the issues of subject recognition and topic map construction. 
That is slowly changing.
