Yes, that's the point. Or the question. Can we identify subjects in
MARC? I am not familiar with MARC, but from what I've seen, it seems
to be very difficult.

Yes, that was my point. Maybe I understood your approach wrongly, but
I thought it was something like "Let's use occurrences and see how far
we get with that".

But using occurrences won't trigger any merging operations and won't
let applications identity the subjects (unless you're happy to use a
full-text index).
