I've also had good results using BerkeleyDB, as it too uses a key-value
structure with no fixed schema, has almost no practical limits on size
(for my purposes), is very high performance, and is very widely supported
(now by Oracle, who seems to own pretty much everything nowadays, go
figure). The XML version of the database is basically a layer-on-top of
the basic BerkeleyDB, and there are implementations in multiple languages,
including a pure Java version suitable for embedding.
