Topic maps where "merging" has no side effects on the proxies that
comprise the topic map. 

It is sufficient that when I specify merging conditions that the proxies
meeting those conditions present themselves as merged with whatever
properties I have assigned to them. 

Other functions can be executed against the results of those functions.
