I think the main difference is actually syntax vs. mental model. I'd
think that the mental model is more important (since it ensures
consistence).

If we should treat Topic Maps seriously, the verbal model shouldn't
play an important role, but a more formal, consistent model. If I'd go
a step further, t/association should also return occurrences since an
occurrence (acc. to TMDM) is a specialization of an association. I
wouldn't mention it, though. ;)

Yep, the "s" would go away. :) But I meant "assoc/type" vs
"topic/type". Although the number of path names is my weakest
argument. The mental model is my main argument.
