Subject: [topicmapmail] TMLab closed down - Impacts?

Hi Lars,

the Topic Maps Lab has NOT closed down, but obviously there were
significant changes this week.

There are still three researchers and two student employees in the Lab
offices. They work on projects about the Thomaner boy choral, the
repertoire of music institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, as well
about data management for biodiversity research in Chinese forests. The
full Lab infrastructure is maintained by the team, it has access to all
technology which was developed within the last years and the team is
engaged in the acquisition of new projects and funding. Contact Thomas
Efer or Peter Scholz to get in touch with the Lab staff.

Besides this Benjamin and others have left the Lab to establish a
subsidiary of a successful software company here in Leipzig. They aim to
disseminate Topic Maps technologies into industry projects for
remarkable customers. Perhaps Benjamin wants to write more about this.

I have left the Topic Maps Lab, too. I'm working now at the Fraunhofer
MOEZ research institute. Here we are working on the international
evaluation of innovation and transfer systems for the dissemination of
(environmental) technology. My focus is integrating Topic Maps
technologies into research and industry projects of the MOEZ. The
institute is full of challenges where Topic Maps (and semantic
technologies in general) seems to be very suitable.

Last but not least I want to point to Sven Windisch, who has founded TML
consulting [1] and acquired remarkable projects based on the Lab
technology within the last months.

This is a short summary of the current development behind the scenes of
the Topic Maps Lab. After two years of generous funding we took the
opportunity to disseminate our technology and experiences in a broad field.

But now coming back to your questions about the maintenance of the Lab
projects.

This holds for the whole community: Please use the projects from the
Topic Maps Lab! Please report your issues! Any project from the Lab you
can use is Open Source. Hence everyone can solve your issues. But
besides this, the current owners and committers (the former Lab
employees) will be engaged in there products in the case there is
interest in using and refining the software. I can't promise, but I
suppose that in the most cases reported issues will be considered. (I
assume that the time frame will be volatile, because some of the
software is now maintained in the leisure time of the project owners,
but others will be reused in new projects.)

As more the existing projects will be used by the community the higher
is the probability that the projects will be maintained, will be reused
in new projects and will be transformed into vital Open Source projects.

Greetings from Leipzig
Lutz
