I happen to disagree.

In the Unix world, file name extensions are a matter of convention;
they are rarely enforced by applications; there are many use cases
where the file type is obvious from the context and no extension
is used, or extensions are used for purposes other than indicating
the file type.

In the DOS/Windows world, insisting on "yaml", and declaring "yml" as
incorrect, might be seen as anything between insane and unfriendly.

Insisting on a peculiar file name extensions is the more superfluous
as YAML is a human-readable format, and 1.1 documents even begin
with the %YAML-1.1 declaration.

Therefore I suggest that the specification should no more than
indicate, say:

»Conventional file name extensions for YAML documents are ".yaml"
and ".yml".«
