The Unicode standard is defined such that all the 8-bit values (0-255) are valid code points, so it is possible to use "\xNN" to represent any "byte" in a YAML string. However (1) *Not* all 16-bit "\uNNNN" or 32-bit "\UNNNNNNNN" are valid and (2) this doesn't solve William's problem.
