Right now we are using the nodeca/js-yaml library, which outputs as surrogate pairs. I was trying to get this changed to either a single escape (like your example), or, if it was considered a printable character, just output it directly. But both I and (I think) the maintainer were a little confused on if there was a correct way to do it, or if, in fact, we should be outputting as surrogate pairs (see nodeca/js-yaml#368 and #369).
