As you mentioned, your system crashed after installing drivers-
as far i can recall there is no need to install drivers explicitly in
most of the linux system(most of the drivers are already bundled with
iso image.) untill it is for a particular component.
Anyway if that is the case i suggest you to install a basic linux distro
with minimal funcions like ArchLinux/ArchBang.
Archbang comes in a small file size (~500mb) and it installs only core
and some other functionality. thus you will have advantage of debugging
your os problem easily.
You can also try Gentoo, FreeBSD if you want (take more time and
patience comparatively.)
