Well yes "possible" but "not feasible" solution for internet!
 
our whole internet infrastructure is based on routing algorithms which uses the IP addresses ..
note that the IP addresses can be assigned to the machine (changable) and MAC are hard coded.
 
thats the purpose of this layer of abstraction for the underlying hardware .. 
note that at the LAN level communication is thru MAC only (remember the MAC protocols)
but at the internet level we also meed things like proxys, internal IP addresses for a LAN, and things like network address translators which require and must have IP information.
 
Its also not possible with MAC as with IP to form domains and IP addresses distribution at the global level .. 
In short .. .now we have reached a stage where IP addr is all :)
If the netwroks would have begun without IP then there was a chance of something else to come up!
