Well, that reminds me. My univ has some research going on in the field of blogosphere ... the research is about distinguishing between blogs and splogs (spam blogs) ... The word "splog" is coined in August 2005!! The funda is that Google uses PageRank to rank the popularity of the pages in the search. Splogs are generated by people (equivalent to hackers) to wrongly promote the websites by increasing their visibility through clicks on the splog pages. Now many blogs have ads on the pages, and on every click Google earns some cents from the advertising company. So the splogs are actually causing loss to the other company and Google is benefiting from it .... Naturally Google is not keen on splog detection.
