Happy to hear that it's been figured out,

So generally, when a node along the network path gets a packet with a
larger MTU than it can handle, it should send back an ICMP "Fragmentation
Needed" back to the sender - the sending host would then fragment the
packet.
So either your router isn't doing this, or you're blocking all ICMP on your
sending host - both of which would make some sense.

Having a smaller MTU will generally mean there will be more packets being
sent, which will mean there's a larger overhead for each transfer - so
throughput may suffer a little bit.
