Correct.

To set appropriate permissions (so only the appropriate accounts can do
what they need) the standard filesystem permissions are used. You might
look at NFSv4 if you have a fair sized deployment, allowing you to keep
uids and gids the same across the board. It is messy, with either v3 or
v4 as you need to map things or simply not care until something doesn't
work right.

But, why NFS? Just for $HOME foo? What is your one source of truth for
user accounts? If it is for Uni, please don't say "local". :) If it is
LDAP, you could tie the NFS server into it for mapping the uid/gid and
Bob's your uncle ...
