Strange problem with VGA signal

I have an HP N36L microserver with a strange problem. I wonder if anyone
here has seen something similar.

The VGA output displays fine on a CRT. But on multiple LCD screens I get no
signal at all. Presumable it's an unsupported mode. But this is true even
for the BIOS splash and BIOS setup screens. It's also true for 80x24
console mode in grub.

I've tested the same screens from a laptop and they work fine. I have the
list of modes from the LCD edid and they seem to have a healthy range of
frequencies at reasonable resolutions.

I'm a bit at a loss. I can try more resolutions in Linux fbdev and maybe
user one of those in grub. But if I can't see the BIOS setup then I won't
really be happy disposing of this CRT which was the goal of this exercise.
Surely as soon as I do I'll find a BIOS setting I need to change.
