[LIG] Newbie to Linux

hi

i want to learn this valuable operating system but
unable to do anything i don't know how to work even in
open office org , how to use download files if root
only can download ......so many so many question and
no answer 
kindly tell me from where i get help . i m Sub
Inspector in Punjab Police and unable to attend
regular long term course . either some good book on
basic linux or some corresponding course or free linux
support 
i have dual booting XP and Fedora Core 5 and just
start " Linux For you " magzine 
i m crazy for linux kindly help me
