excellent point, anand.
we tend to gloss over the indian and indic-vision on ownership,
copyrights, and sharing knowledge.
venky from redhat has spoken, blogged, and otherwise written several
times about this disconnect. vandana shiva of naudanya has also done
considerable work in this area.

sometimes i feel india is a sleeping giant, having forgotten who it
is, where it comes from, the intangible riches it has shared with the
civilizations of the world, and the value-system it nurtured and
brought forth through thousands of years.

would self-remembrance inspire a revelation in the copyright and patents think?

profound question of the day: do we mistakenly believe that software
has nothing to do with culture?

ask microsoft no why they had to hire former secretary of state henry
kissinger for handling the china markets for them. read more in this
article "how microsoft conquered china"
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/07/23/100134488/

in russia, microsoft created a campaign based on russia's greatest
literary authors using them as metaphors and examples to sensitize
people on making unauthorised copies of intellectual work.
here, check it out.

i often wonder, who would microsoft or the bsa or other supportive
agencies, hire in india, so our culture may happily get sensitized to
their issues ;-)
