Hi

UNPv1,2 are more geared towards programming using the
availible APIs(Sockets and XTI/TLI).So a good
knowledge about networks and protocols is required. The
book(UNP) does say so, in the first few pages, that
APUE and TCPv1,2,3 should be read before reading UNP
series.

So for concepts and theory go through TCPv1,2,3 and
APUE and then start UNP v1,2.

3. Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment-APUE
is aimed at teaching you the system call interface on
a UNIX system. And it's the best book i 've read about
it till now.

You can also try Internetworking with TCP/IPv1,2,3 by
Doug Comer for the concepts on networks and protocols,
but UNP(Unix Network programming, stevens) remains,
IMHO, the best reference for n/w programming on *nix
systems.
