You need to do all three ? or just pick one ?

I'd go with either the networking or java... from the perspective of the
project adding value to your resume when you are out looking for a job in a
year!

Whats wrong with adding modules ? If it gets accepted by the project owner..
and you get to have your name in the project credits it's worth a lot more
than anything else and is an endorsement that your coding style/standards are
up to expectations of those projects(am talking about large/popular projects
with an active community of users/developers.)

These days some projects also have bounties for features/bugfixes etc.. so
you can even give a shot at making some $$$ ;-)

With something you do on your own... you'll mostly be re-inventing the
wheel.(re-inventing it badly... have seen students do stuff like
voip/video-conference etc... but when there are standards based stuff like
SIP/h323 etc... which have been developed/refined over the years... anything
you do over a 3 month won't match up.)

Gnomemeeting (gnomemeeting.org) has plans to add SIP support... check out if
you can help in that effort.

Lots of 3D stuff have been added to the new java release I think... also java
midlets are cool... Someone has recreated the Mario game for my Siemens S55
in Java! hardly 80kb.. and it's amazing!

http://www.aquajava.hu/en/content.php?file=mobario-about

(looks like it now works on other java phones too)

BTW The new Siemens S65 has support for 3D Games on the phone!

They have a developer portal on their site... and you can download SDKs from
there.. and probably even an emulator.

This is a wierd thing I hear all the time .. "CGI" makes it sound like it's a
big deal.. but all your program does is spew out HTML... it doesn't matter
what language you use... what defines/seperates your application from the
rest is what functionality it provides.

(A simple feedback form is CGI ... as is Google or Gmail! .. So what is your
project's scope going to be ?)
