[LIP] perl & CGI

hello friends,
      im running a server and client perl script.when
my client connects to me i need to obtain its address
and forward the request to some other server by
changing the target address.i need to get the 12th
byte of my packet.
if it is an array i can obtain the 12th byte
easily.but since im getting the entire message from my
client in a scalar variable how am i do this.
