[LIP] learning php

hi,
am learning php. my method of learning a new language is to take a 
running application and fiddle around with it. Can anyone suggest a 
compact php application to do this. Specs:
Database driven web application with user configurable cmf features. 
Should be compact and the code should not be written in chinese.
