Hi Diana,

From your description it sounds like it is a Virgin cable modem that
connects to your laptop via an ethernet cable. If that's wrong please
say so. I have no experience with cable modems but there are generic
steps we can follow before going into cable modem specifics.

Please send the output of these commands:

1) ip link
2) ip addr
3) ip route

Does network manager report a successful connection at the ethernet level?
