Can you reflash the routerboard hardware with a different distro?

I am considering either the Routerboard or one of PC Engines ALIX
boards (also sold by Xagyl).

One of the advantages I see with the ALIX boards is that I can easily
install Debian on it. One of the complaints I have read online about
Mikrotik is that they are less then open about their use of Linux and
giving back to the Linux community. A routerboard 433 is cheaper.
