Strange sound behavior

I just installed some sound.wav files into Fedora 8 because I wanted a
better selection. I put them where all the other sounds are. I can
access them when logged in as a user, but as soon I use one of the "new"
sound files, the sound system stops altogether and I have to log off and
log on again.. The kosher Fedora sounds work OK : it's just if I try one
of the new ones.

Any idea why? And any idea how I can get around this?
