Communicating with other computers ??

Hi;

Just looking for some pointers to programs for communicating between my
Linux computer and the other M$ Windows we have at home.

My house is wired for a local household network; all the howtos that I
can find are for Windows-to-Windows; or, Linux-to-Linux.

Can you just point me to applications that will let me log in to
one of these Windows machines from Linux.  Is it possible?  What can I
expect to do when and if I log in.  Is telnet useful?  How would I use
it?
