ubuntu & wireless network on a Dell D600

I've been working on getting this going for the past week or so
without success. I do thank those who responded to my plea for help.

So the situation is as follows:

I know that the hardware is OK - I even reinstalled Windows XP on it and
made sure that the wireless worked - at the same time I downloaded and
kept aside the Dell drivers - it is the TrueMobile 1450.

Then I wiped the drive and installed ubuntu again. I also installed
the packages for ndiswrapper and the b43-fwcutter. Using the
optionally downloaded GUI for ndiswrapper, after having unzipped the
dell drivers, I pointed to the .inf file. All this is pretty much
what everything I have seen says to do.

Here's the glitch - if I click on the network icon, the only network
that it shows is the eth0 (the wired 10/100/1000 NIC) - no wireless.
When I open "Drivers", I see that the B43 is installed, but is not
enabled. When I click the box to enable it, the system freezes
totally, and there is no response from any input device, which means
that I have to force a shutdown.

Everything else on the D600 with ubuntu runs just fine, and in fact
the install is really slick (a huge improvement over the installs I
did with Fedora Core 1).

Any ideas as to what to do next?
