Trouble with drive Caddy

This may be more BIOS than linux, but I'm hoping someone might have an answer.

I've installed on of the drive caddy that lets you swap drives by removing the 
drawer.

The probldm is that the OS does not see it.

I'm still running an old kernel on ths machine.
With the drive connected directly
fdisk /dev/hda 

shows the partitions, but when in the drawer it does not

dmesg give a message that it is disabled in BIOS

I've tried the BIOS set to both auto and removeable IDE, and the drive set to 
master and cable select.

Any ideas on getting the caddy to work?
