I once had something working, a long time ago, through Telus. 
Unfortunately, I don't remember the card, the protocols, the work, or 
the configuration necessary to get it going.

My understanding is that all these connections are PPP-based; it's just 
how the networks are designed.  Whether or not drivers exist, I'm not 
sure, but you may be able to use the NDIS wrapper stuffs to bring it online.

Of course, you can always make sure they have a good return policy when 
you buy it.  I'll be looking at doing something very similar in a couple 
of weeks.

Alternatively, depending on your requirements, WiMax may also be an option.
