Honestly I would check out a packet dump... Windows does some crazy ass
things when it traverses directories.

I had some xp machines that were on a huge samba share, and every time they
traversed a directory, they would look for system dll's on the current path
slowing everything down.

A packet dump and increasing samba's debug info are probably the two best
suggestions.
