If an xterm is capable of starting another X program, such as another
xterm, you should be able to get your menu's back by running the
program "gnome-panel".

I learned things like this by viewing the output of "ps fax" to see
which programs are started when you select a menu item.
It's handy information when running programs on a remote machine and
might help in a situation like yours.
