To answer my own question, avidemux offers an OCR VobSub to srt
conversion tool. A little training of the program is required but it
works well. DeVeDe will bundle up the subs and do the avi conversion
giving a burn ready iso. Not as pretty as some but very usable. 

Back to viewing obscure pre-war Japanese films.
