If your modem does NAT and will hand out DHCP addresses, and the router is the usual one-WAN, four-LAN port models, you can try to turn the router into a simple switch: Plug the modem into one of the four LAN ports (possibly using a cross-over cable, if needed) and then plug three computers into the remaining LAN ports. That will bypass the WAN port and use the router as a simple four-port switch. You may have to turn off the router's DHCP so that it doesn't hand out addresses.
