Hi Rob,
In principle it is not too difficult to set up postfix, however there
are incidental issues that you need to deal with for this to work.
1) you need to have a static IP address
2) you need a domain name
3) DNS and reverse DNS lookup for this address and domain must work
(otherwise mail originating from this address will be tagged as spam
by destination servers)
4) Your ISP shouldn't be blocking port 25
(Rogers and others routinely do)
5) Oher security related miscellanea (sever in a DMZ, etc.)
As for the server itself, the simplest thing for a MTA newbie is to do
is to set up Zimbra Community edition.
