I suggest that one (some?) of your environment variables are set to
something that man misunderstands. Check the "ENVIRONMENT" paragraphs of
the man manpage (execute "man man"). On Linux (Ubuntu 9.04) I'd check
thusly:

% env | egrep 'TERM|MANOPT|SYSTEM|BROWSER|MANLESS|PAGER|MANPAGER|MANROFFSEQ|MANROFFOPT|LC_|LANG'
TERM=xterm
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
GDM_LANG=en_US.UTF-8
COLORTERM=gnome-terminal
