disappearing e-mails

Suddenly, with no changes on my part, my system puts downloaded e-mails
somewhere I cannot find them. I have tried two ways around this :
1) adding a new user and using that;
2) re-installing Fedora 10.
No change. When I go to evolution to get my mail, there's a lot of modem
activity (ADSL) and it appears that messages are coming in but they
never get into my evolution InBox. Indeed, I can't find them ANYWHERE.
I have just replaced the cable going to the router with a new one = no
change.
Firefox works OK and quickly and I can go anywhere even to seeing that
there are still messages waiting for me on Bell's Sympatico server.
If I go onto my wife's system in another room sharing the same router, I
CAN see my e-mails after they have been downloaded.
Anyone any ideas as to what's going wrong here? I am completely puzzled.
