I didn't yet find an option to enter an arbitrary character, but all the ones I want are there, and it's far easier to remember. And yes, I remember Sun workstations from the old days had a "compose" key that worked in exactly that way. I didn't know Linux had it. Just for the record, on my Ubuntu, I found the option under System - Preferences - Keyboard - Layout Options - Compose Key Position. None was checked; I chose the right "windoze" key.
