The "kill-a-watt" will tell you how many watts the unit needs at any instant. Your UPS MUST be able to provide that much power (plus a bit to spare as the load may vary) The UPS will also have an watt-Hour rating, say your system draws 200 w, and the UPS is rated for 400Watt-hours So it could run the computer for 2 hours. if it was good for 100 watt hours you would have a half hour to get things shut down, BUT if the load capacity was less than the 200W the system would draw, you would either blow a fuse in the UPS or let out the famous "magic smoke" that Alan of Red Hat always used to blog about.
