Your math is perfect, but your hopes are a bit high. The UPSs I've seen last long enough to shut things down cleanly, and that's about it. For a normal computer, I would suggest this hardware: http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10323342 and note that software is available: http://www.mscs.dal.ca/~selinger/ups/backups.html (never tried it). I think the purpose of the software is to report status, and also to shut down cleanly, in the event of a power failure. The consumer grade UPSs are not that good. They quote the VA as though they're watts. The 650VA will actually supply 390 watts. It will run at that level for 4 minutes, or more realistically, 13 minutes at half load.
