I have three APC 750VA UPSs (one for my PVR, 1 for my network and
one for a PC). The PC (a SFF HP running Fedora) runs for about 10
minutes on the UPS. It's set to shut down after 5 min on battery using
the apc daemon. It works admirably to precent disk corruptions. The
network UPS last about 45 minutes. All of the UPS are about 5 years
old and have shown no sign of degradation.
The point of the UPS is to ride out the short outages and shut down
cleanly. If I remember my power systems properly, if the outage is
more than a minute, it's going to be at least 10 minutes because human
intervention is required to restore power.
