Terminal problem

I am running Fedora 11. I recently did a re-install due to a hard drive
quitting.
Everything was fine until about a couple of hours ago when I wanted to
fire up
gnome-terminal which had previously been running OK.
All I get now is an error message which reads :

There was an error creating the child process for this terminal X-(

I've never seen this before.

I therefore removed the app with Add/Remove Software and reinstalled it.
It still doesn't work : same error message.

Any clues as to what has happened here? I should hate to have to go
through a complete install again as there would be around 500 updates
which take up a lot of time.

Any help will be much appreciated.
