Fire it up, plug in an external monitor, cross fingers and click on "Detect monitors". All going well it will do just that. You get a graphical display of the current layout and can drag the monitors around to choose which is to left etc. Also can select which ones are on. For me it "just works" As to getting him to switch, you'll probably not get too many support requests once he is up and running. A good option is to get a USB stick with the latest netbook remix and just boot from that. That way he can see what it is like (it actually runs pretty well off the stick), before taking the plunge.
