There *has* to ba a flavour that actually works with the Dell D600 notebook, but I can't find it. Last year I installed Ubuntu (Hardy Heron) and it ran OK. Then the upgrades came out - Ibex and Jackalope - with Ibex getting somewhat flakey and Jackalope totally freezing the system. So I tried Fedora, but it wouldn't even load the install CD. To check to see if this was a hardware issue (after all the D600 is about 5 years old), I reinstalled Windoze. The system worked fine, so I knew that the issue was not hardware. So I installed openSUSE 11.1. Initially it ran well, but after doing an update the logon screen wouldn't accept input from the keyboard (as in typing in the password) if the system was running on battery; it worked only if the system was plugged into 110 volts. Because of the ease of getting the wireless network to work (Ubuntu was horror story) I opted to totally reinstall openSUSE 11.1 - everything worked just fine both on battery power and AC. Then there were a number of security updates, which I installed and the system has reverted to only allowing a logon when on AC power. The other downside is that getting the multimedia player to play .wmv .avi and .flv formats still hasn't been solved (these all worked fine in Ubuntu). Does anyone know of a flavour of linux that will work with a Dell D600 notebook (uses a Broadcom BCM4318 wireless NIC)?
