I use 'thunderbird'. I had no trouble following sympatico's directions for POP. Nothing, not even the infinite number of monkeys, worked for SMTP. I was told about Google's standard instructions : http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13287 Somewhere in there it says : " Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication) Use Authentication: Yes Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL) " Note "TLS" and "SSL". I decided "some clients" means M$ windoze. I set 'thunderbird' to 'tls' as Google instructs, instead 'ssl' as sympatico instructs. It works.
