Scripted modification of image files

A long while ago someone gave a talk at an OCLUG meeting about their
process for automatically adding "mark-ups", such as a border and file
name block, into a large body of image files via script(s). Does anyone
remember anything about this? A co-worker asked about how to "tag" all
his digital camera photos, and all I could remember was that someone had
spoken about this in the past.
