Lost file allocation table on USB hard drive

Hello everyone,
I have an Ubuntu server that I use for storing files on.
It's a small atom machine with a USB hard drive attached to it.
Last week I couldn't access the folder that the USB drive is mounted
to and when I run fdisk on it I get the following message:
Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)
fdisk does identify the correct size of the drive but says that there
are no partitions on it.

I've been poking around online but haven't found anything too useful yet 
so I was wondering what everyone's recommendation was.

I ran the command gpart but it couldn't find any partitions.

I looked into the commands rescuept and fixdisktable but I couldn't
figure out how to install them on my system (even trying to build them
from source).

The drive powers up ok and the system detects it correctly if I turn it off/on.

So, if anyone has any pointers about how to rebuild the fat table that would be great.
