Just picked up a nice Gateway laptop from Future Shop a week ago.  It 
was $469 on sale, plus, if you buy a Telus or Rogers wireless usb stick 
(rocket stick) contract, you got an additional $300 off the price of any 
laptop.  I took that deal since my ISP (wireless, rural area) is flaky 
at the best of times so I wanted a backup solution; I'm signed on for 
$30/mo for two years.  In the end, I got a laptop, 15.6"screen, 2.3GHz 
dual core Pentium, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, wireless n, DVD recorder for 
$179.  It's lacking an HDMI port, has one rather tinny sounding speaker, 
no line in, just two USB ports and no modem but none of those are really 
deal breakers for me as I don't play games on my PC and I don't do much 
video work other that some streaming to the Xbox (better speakers would 
have been nice though).

It came with Windows 7 which I'm running, but a colleague at work bought 
a similar unit (1 model up, I believe) and he's happily running Ubuntu 
with few issues.
