Can you access the web-based interface to manage the router, and verify
the status of the serial port ? DD-WRT, which is sometime installable on
NetGear routers, should be able to let ou do anything you want. Unless
the port is actually not wired to anything or there is no serial port
processor on the board. The firmware might have the port disabled by
default, requiring an "upgrade" to enable it. Again, DD-WRT if it can be
installed on your router, should enable all available hardware on your
router. i know it was enabling the USB port for many purposes than the
stock firmware would let me do.

I don't know if the router serial port is supposed to work, there is no
documentation.
